About the Theme

If I had to name my favorite style of wine, it might be "volcanic wines," and that's how this theme was born. I've had the idea in mind for a long time, ever since traveling to Sicily, to Somló, and honestly, to any region touched by volcanic influence.

Volcanic soil can seem counterintuitive, even paradoxical: the land looks harsh and holds almost no water. But in that environment, many grape vines don't just survive, they thrive. Why? Because stress can be healthy. The vine works harder, the roots burrow deeper, the grapes come in smaller numbers, and the wines end up more complex and expressive than their comparatively coddled counterparts.

This Box is For...

Six bottles shaped by some of the world's harshest soils: sandy granite in Chile, extinct-volcano basalt in Hungary, black volcanic ash on Tenerife, granite bedrock in the Loire, and the slopes of an active volcano in Sicily. This box is great for:

  • A tasting night organized around one idea: stressed vines make better wine
  • A gift for the geology nerd who wants their wine list to double as a rock collection
  • Anyone curious what wine actually tastes like when it's grown in soil that barely holds water
  • A dinner party where "what does volcanic even mean, for wine" becomes the whole conversation
  • The wine lover ready to compare Etna to the Canary Islands to a Hungarian hill that used to sit underwater

A deeper Look: What Does "Volcanic" Actually Mean?

Not every rock in this box came out of a volcano, and that's worth being upfront about.

  • Somló, the extinct volcano behind our Fekete Pince Hárslevelű, is about as volcanic as wine gets: the hill is mostly basalt and volcanic tuff, formed by underwater eruptions roughly ten million years ago.
  • Mount Etna, where Ayunta farms Nerello Mascalese on the northern slopes near Randazzo, is an active volcano, and its soils are true volcanic rock that still shifts with every eruption.
  • Tenerife's Valle de la Orotava, home to Suertes del Marqués, sits on volcanic ash and rock from Mount Teide. Phylloxera never reached the island, so many of the region's Listán Negro vines are ungrafted and over a century old.
  • Slavonia's Kutjevo district, where SoHu's Graševina grows, owes its soil to the Papuk mountains, a volcanic range whose 40-to-60-million-year-old rock underlies the region's "Golden Valley."
  • Two bottles are the exception: Itata (Chile) and Muscadet's "Sur Granit" bottling are both grown on granite. Granite is igneous, like true volcanic rock, but it cooled slowly underground instead of erupting as lava, so it's a close cousin rather than the same thing. It still shares the core story: poor, mineral, low-water soil that forces a vine to work for everything it gets.

Call it volcanic or call it igneous. Either way, none of these vines had it easy, and none of these wines taste like they did.

Why I Chose this Theme

Volcanic wines might genuinely be my favorite category, so this theme has been years in the making: a trip to Sicily, a trip to Somló, basically every region I've visited that had a volcano nearby or a rock formation that looked like it should've had one.

There's something I love about a vine fighting for survival in soil that can't hold water. It works harder, the roots dig deeper, and you can taste the effort in the glass.
