Azelia is a small family-run winery founded in 1920 by Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino in Castiglione Falletto, right in the heart of the Langhe.
Today, Luigi Scavino runs the estate with his wife Lorella and son Lorenzo, the fifth generation to work these vineyards. Luigi exclusively vinifies grapes from his own estate, and the low yields are reduced further through green harvesting and meticulous hand selection at harvest.
Most of the vines were planted in the 1940s and are only replaced as each one dies, using selection massale from within each individual vineyard. I met Lorenzo at a tasting in Washington DC back in 2019, and what struck me immediately was his demeanor: precise, grounded, and completely unhurried. That same quality comes through in every bottle.
