The Schlossmühlenhof estate began in 1846 when Johann Michel, a miller from Bamberg, purchased the Schlossmühle in Kettenheim, and the property has remained in the Michel family across six generations.
Today the estate rests on the slopes above Kettenheim, in a high valley the locals call "Der kühle Grund" (the cool ground) where temperatures run consistently lower than the rest of Rheinhessen, giving the vines more time to develop complexity and the wines a distinctive freshness and minerality.
Nicolas Michel, now running the estate, works organically and as gently as possible in the cellar, prioritizing long aging on the lees for natural stabilization. In 2019 he launched the Boden Funk range, a low-intervention line built on extended skin contact and spontaneous fermentation.
The name translates roughly as "sound waves," expressing the idea that terroir travels from the roots through the vines and finally into the grapes themselves.
