What to Pair

This Muscadet's bright acidity and wet-stone minerality are built for delicate seafood and gentle richness:

  • Sole meunière, or another light white fish with lemon and butter
  • Leek and goat cheese tart

About the Producer

Les Bêtes Curieuses began in 2005, when Jérémie Huchet and Jérémie Mourat met by chance at the London Wine Fair and decided to make wine together.

Huchet farms cru communal vineyards across some of Muscadet's best-known zones, while Mourat runs his family's estate in the neighboring Fiefs-Vendéens appellation, and together they built a small range centered entirely on the Melon de Bourgogne grape.

This bottling comes from vines rooted in granite, an intrusive rock formed as magma cools slowly deep underground before being pushed upward over millions of years, which is what gives the wine its distinct, vertical minerality.

It's part of a newer wave of Muscadet producers paying closer attention to terroir after decades in which the region's reputation suffered from overproduction and cheap bulk wine.

Why I Chose this Wine

I used to lump Muscadet in with every other bargain-bin seafood white until I tasted one grown on real granite, and that wet-stone, vertical minerality changed my mind for good.

This one has honeysuckle and river rock trading places all the way through, with floral notes that somehow stick around into the finish, which isn't supposed to happen with a grape this humble.

It's a low-key redemption story for a wine that spent decades being underestimated, and I'll take any excuse to pour it.
