The Zajc family has been tending vines in Slovenia's Dolenjska region since 1858, when they acquired their oldest vineyard above the ruins of Mokrice castle. Two local winemaking families became one in 1970, when Ivana Curhalek married into the Zajc name, and today brothers Božidar Jr. and Marko run the cellar together.
We love that it's still a true family operation, working the same hillsides along the Krka River their grandparents did. What they make is cviček, Slovenia's national wine and one of only two wines in the world legally permitted to blend red and white grapes in the same bottle.
