About the Theme

I curated this shipment to highlight winemakers that just do things a bit differently, whether that's different than their neighbors, their region, or than anyone else around. It's much harder to be a trailblazer and to be innovative in wine because you only get one shot every year. It's such a long feedback loop that it requires no small degree of both courage and conviction to do things differently.

And in this theme, that courage and conviction is what I'm celebrating.

In featuring Rebel Winemakers, I took a slightly rebellious approach myself and took a risk or two with my selections. I'm eager to hear from you whether they paid off.

A deeper Look: What Makes a Winemaker a Rebel?

It's not about being difficult. It's about having a point of view strong enough to act on even when the market, the region, or decades of convention point the other way.

Fausto Abrigo at Poderi Cellario borrowed a technique from sourdough bread-making to support natural fermentation.
Massimiliano Calabretta blends wines across multiple vintages at a time when the market rewards single-vintage releases.
Marianna Annichiarico at Pietraventosa is making restrained, elegant Primitivo from a region better known for big, extracted reds.
Luis Pato has spent decades championing Baga, a grape his own region largely abandoned, and in doing so has inspired a generation of winemakers around him to do the same.

None of them are rebelling for the sake of it. They're just unwilling to make wine any other way.

Why I Chose this Theme

Rebel Winemakers was one of my favorite themes I've put together for the club, and the wines were popular enough that I knew I wanted to find a way to get them in front of non-members too.

These are wines from a fourth-generation winemaker in the Italian Dolomites who borrowed a technique from sourdough bread-making to ferment his Barbera, a Croatian producer treating a grape that everyone else dismissed as a high-yield workhorse like it deserves to be taken seriously, and Luis Pato, one of the biggest self-proclaimed rebellious figures in Portuguese wine, making sparkling rosé from 100% Baga at a time when most of his neighbors had given up on it.

And that's just naming a few.
