Geyerhof's roots in the village of Oberfucha go back nearly a thousand years, with the estate staying in the same family for fourteen generations.
In the 17th century, Empress Maria Theresia granted the family a concession to ship wine down the Danube as far as Hungary, and Napoleon's army later stored its wine rations in one of the estate's cellars during the nearby Battle of Wagram.
Ilse and Josef Maier converted the vineyards to organic farming in the late 1980s, making Geyerhof one of the first wineries in Austria to do so, and the estate now farms under Demeter biodynamic certification. Today it's run by the next generation, Maria and Josef Maier, who keep the holistic approach going alongside cattle, draft horses, chickens, and bees.
