The Ciavolich family arrived in Abruzzo as wool merchants in the 1500s and built their first wine cellar in 1853, one of the oldest winemaking structures in the region. That cellar still stands today, and during WWII the family expanded a cave on its eastern wall into a tunnel used as a bomb shelter until they were forced from the estate in December 1943.
Since 2004, the estate has been run by Chiara Ciavolich and her husband Gianluca, with Chiara focused on varieties with deep roots in Abruzzo, Pecorino included.
She is a fierce defender of tradition, Abruzzo, and her family's legacy, with the bulk of her vineyards in Loreto Aprutino, pinched between the coast and the Gran Sasso of the Apennines. The Aries comes from those vineyards, hand-harvested at first light and carried to the winery in small baskets.
