TASTING NOTES:
Nose: A more delicate, refrained bouquet with notes of cherry / dried cherry; licorice and fennel seeds; leather, tar, slightly oxidative as well: hint of nuttiness and savory edge
Palate: velvety, luxurious but still lively; feels like a wine with 15–20 years of age
FOOD PAIRING RECOMMENDATION:
Filet mignon with black pepper
or
Pasta with sausage and leeks
ASHWIN'S REFLECTION:
Andrea Cortonesi leads the project at Voliero, and he captures the elegance AND freshness that Sangiovese is capable of presenting in the glass. Slightly higher elevation vineyards plus slightly older vines allow for an expression of Brunello that maintains some youthfulness more than most expressions. Annual production, the Voliero wines are wonderfully terroir-expressive and well-balanced. I recommend decanting this wine or, at the very least, opening it a few hours before you intend to enjoy it.
