ASHWIN'S REFLECTION:
Bulgaria, like many former Soviet or close-knit Soviet-satellite states, has a complicated recent history with winemaking. While there has been thousands of years of winemaking history, the late 1900s were tumultuous with a focus on bulk wine to satiate the demand from Russia, followed by Gorbachev's dry law, which tanked the industry in Bulgaria, to now a slow and steady resurgence from a younger generation. While massive amounts of grape vines were getting ripped up in the aftermath of Gorbachev's dry law, these particular vines did not, and here we get to taste Rkatsiteli & Aligoté from 50+ year old Bulgarian vines.
