TASTING NOTES:
Nose: Blackberry and rose petal + violet; minerality → wet slate and asphalt; chalky as well; hints of vegetal like fresh cut grass. Chewy aromas too.
Palate: well-balanced and elegant with moderate acidity and medium to full body. Moderate tannins that build beautifully, becoming grippy by the end.
FOOD PAIRING RECOMMENDATION:
Massaman curry (pick your protein)
or
Kofte kebab with mint
ASHWIN'S REFLECTION:
I don’t generally like Primitivo (or Zinfandel as it’s also called) because the wine usually gets too big—too alcoholic, too extracted, etc. That’s the norm of Primitivo in southern Italy, but Pietraventosa is casting those norms aside (along with gender norms!) and is producing a more restrained, elegant, terroir-driven Primitivo and focusing on the fruit and the land as opposed to the oak and the alcohol. The winery was born out of an intense desire to give Primitivo from Gioia del Colle a well-deserved place among Italian wines, and I think Pietraventosa and the team have done just that.
