TASTING NOTES:
Needs 10 minutes to breathe.
Nose: Tropical fruit, minerality, floral. Mango, passion fruit, tangerine pith; wet slate/chalky, chamomile.
Palate: Very mineral-driven on the palate with a lovely direct finish. Slightly oily texture.
FOOD PAIRING RECOMMENDATION:
Grilled cheese with green apple, or slow-cooked veal with herbs.
ASHWIN'S REFLECTION:
There's less than 150 cases of this wine produced every year, and it comes from Hungary's smallest but most potent wine region: Somló. Here, we've got the notoriously difficult-to-pronounce variety, Hárslevelű, which is affectionately referred to in the area as "Harsch," hence the name. It's an extremely terroir-expressive and varietal-characteristic-expressive wine, given that the farming is organic, the fermentation is wild, and the fining/filtering is nonexistent — i.e., the grapes and the land are what you get to experience in the glass.
