TASTING NOTES:
Nose: tropical fruits: guava, passion fruit, green mango; lightly floral → honeysuckle as well as aromas of honey. Mineral undercurrent as is typical of Somló wines w/ a hint of spiciness as well.
Palate: Bright and very fresh on the palate with more minerality coming forward than on the nose.
FOOD PAIRING RECOMMENDATION:
Chicken piccata with capers and lightly caramelized onion
or
French onion soup
ASHWIN'S REFLECTION:
Hárslevelű is quite rare for us to find as a mono-varietal in the U.S. — perhaps because it’s a seemingly difficult grape to pronounce. However, its character of being generous with tropical fruit aromas while carrying a backbone of minerality makes it a delightful paradox in the glass. Beyond that, this wine is made by two close friends, Zsófi and Gábor who tend to the vines in the field and the wines in the cellar with as little intervention as possible despite the risks that can entail. The grapes are harvested manually, and they are fermented primarily with ambient yeast after which the wine ages in neutral Hungarian oak barrels.
