On The Volcano…
Fekete Pince, Juhfark 2019
Juhfark means "sheep's tail," named for the long, droopy shape of its grape bunches. Somló is where it's most at home, so you won't see it on many wine lists. Fermented in 1,000-liter Hungarian oak, then at least two years in tank before release. Light, dry, high acid, and seriously mineral.

Fekete Pince, Furmint 2021
Furmint is Hungary's star white grape, and this is it bone dry. Four hours of skin contact, native yeast fermentation in 1,000-liter Hungarian oak, and only 1,400 bottles made. If you like crisp, salty, coastal whites, start with this one.

Fekete Pince, Hárslevelű 2016
A July hailstorm wiped out about two-thirds of the 2016 crop, so this is a tiny vintage: 1,300 bottles. It spent 10 months in old oak and then another 36 months in tank before bottling. Tropical on the nose, then strikingly fresh and mineral once you sip. A 2016 white that still tastes this alive is a good party trick.

Is this a subscription?
No. This is a one-time purchase. You won't be charged again unless you choose to order more.
Aren't Hungarian whites sweet?
Some are. Hungary is famous for sweet Tokaji, so I get why people assume that. But all three of these are dry, with high acidity and a lot of minerality.
Wait, isn't white wine supposed to be drunk young?
Most of it, sure. These aren't most whites. Somló wines have serious natural acidity, and they've had a reputation for aging well for well over a century. Records from the late 1800s show 20- and 30-year-old Somló vintages competing for prizes. Gábor and Zsófi also hold their wines back for years before release (the Hárslevelű spent 10 months in oak and another 36 in tank), so a 10-year-old white from them is exactly what these wines are built for.
I've never heard of these grapes. Will I like them?
If you like crisp, mineral whites, you're in good shape. Honestly, not knowing the grape is the fun part. Start with the Furmint if you want something a little more familiar, then work your way to the Juhfark.
Can I buy these wines individually instead of the bundle?
