ASHWIN'S REFLECTION:
How many non-vintage still wines have you had? I don’t ask it in a challenging way—more to frame how unusual it is to find a non-vintage still wine. And, the reason behind it is such a delightful one, i.e. blending (no pun intended) practicality + art.
Massimiliano Calabretta, the winemaker, believes in slowness, in patience, in aging. However, market pressures and having wine to sell is also a real thing. Holding entire vintages for 10+ years simply isn’t feasible and so he chooses to blend reserve wines for his bottlings, which allow for depth, dimension, age, and balance while still maintaining practicality. This lot is a blend of 2020 and 2015 → mostly Nerello Mascalese with a bit of Nerello Cappuccio.
